A carbon dioxide monitor is a good indicator of how well ventilated a space is. It can't measure whether anyone is sick, but it can give you a good idea of how much fresh air exchange the building has with outdoor air.
elevated CO2 can decrease brain function over 1000 ppm. This is ok for limited periods of time, but can be dangerous if the CO2 level is very high or you are exposed for a long time.
during periods of high transmission of airborne viruses, an elevated CO2 level means your risk is higher--more people breathing in a confined space.
someone infected with covid, during the contagious period, exhales about 1 virus dose (enough to get one person sick) every half hour, even if they have no symptoms. a closed room with one or two infected people inside for several hours is definitely somewhere you should wear a mask!
